President Assad outlines political solution to Syrian conflict

Syria’s president has outlined a plan to end the country’s conflict, starting with a halt to international support to “al Qaeda-linked terrorist groups.” The solution proposes a new constitution and government, as well as national reconciliation.

President Bashar Assad said that his government had never refused a political solution, but would not negotiate with terrorists. He then stressed that the only solution was a Syrian proposal to end the crisis.

“The political solution entails regional and international powers halting their support for armed groups, which will be followed by a halt in our security forces’ crackdown against them,” Assad said in his first public address to the people of Syria since June.

He claimed the move would be followed by dialogue with all parties who work in Syria’s interests, in the form of a national conference on the creation of a truce and the drafting of a new constitution to be put to public vote. The charter would form the basis of the new Syrian government.

The final step would be a national reconciliation process, including amnesty for those imprisoned during the crisis.

President Vladimir Putin has handed Gerard Depardieu a new Russian passport, officially making the French actor a citizen of Russia. The 64-year-old millionaire and bon vivant renounced his French citizenship to avoid paying high taxes.

Depardieu visited the Russian city of Sochi and held a brief meeting with Putin, presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said. During the meeting, Putin and Depardieu discussed the upcoming Russian release of the actor’s film about Grigory Rasputin.

On Thursday, President Putin signed a decree granting the French actor Russian citizenship.

Depardieu expressed his thanks to his new compatriots in letter published in the media, in which he praised the cultural, social and political virtues of his new home and vowed to learn Russian.

In his letter the actor called Russia a “country with a great democracy”, which triggered a wave of criticism and irony from users on Russian social networks.

French politicians mocked Depardieu’s plans as an unbelievably “foolish thing”.

The actor made headlines across the world when he announced in late December that “Putin has already sent me a passport!” The statement turned out to be just a joke, but did not influence Putin’s decision. The next day the President told the media that the French bon vivant, with whom he has long had “kind, friendly, personal relations”, would be welcome in Russia.

The actor decided to renounce his French citizenship over “insulting” accusations of tax evasion from Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault after announcing his plans to move to Belgium.

The Prime Minster called Depardieu`s decision to leave France “pathetic”.

The 24th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival

The 24th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival held its opening night film at the Palm Springs High School Auditorium on Thursday Jan. 3rd. The film, Blancanieves, was from Spain and was directed by Pablo Berger. He said directing is like dreaming awake and being able to live the life of his characters.

The film was in BLACK and WHITE and was a SILENT film. I was curious to see this film and wondered why the PSIFF would select such a film for its Opening Night. The film was a take on the Snow White fairy tale with Dwarfs as bull fighters that rescued Snow White from the evil step mother. Snow White’s father was a bull fighter and not remembering who she was became a famous bull fighter with her dwarf mentors.

It was like going back in time to a silent black and white film from years ago. The acting was superb and the directing was so imaginative. I was only going to stay a while to see what the film was like but ended up staying until the end not realizing I had stayed thru the whole movie. I was so engrossed in the story. There were a few written words on the bottom of the screen and music was played thru the entire film. The ending was so unexpected and heartwarmingly creative.

Words were not needed as the storyline and acting spoke for itself. The PSIFF made a terrific choice as the first film of the festival. It showed the diversity of the 68 countries showing their movies. 180 films in all will be shown ranging from true life and love stories, good will and violence, gay and straight and documentary stories. A film for every taste and country. It’s no wonder people come from all over the world to this film festival.
