The Desert Samaritans for Seniors held ‘AN AFTERNOON OF ENTERTAINMENT and HONOR’ on November 17th at the Marriott Hotel and Spa. The Cocktail hour held a large silent auction with a stilt walker, Hula hoop entertainer and a face painted girl inside a table that moved around the room with silent auction items on the table. A lot of young girls with painted faces and Masks walked around the room to entertain and talk to the guests.

The buffet held mini burgers, mac and cheese, mini hot dogs in a blanket and a salad. There were flavored waters for guests along with a no-host bar. Guests were called into the ballroom for some fantastic entertainment. Dancers and a trapeze artist thrilled the guests. Rob Watkins took on the job as emcee but also entertained with his mid reading rat and a large yellow chicken as a ventriloquist.

The Honorees were presented with their awards. The first honoree Mary Hansen-Faris was presented her award by Jo Anne Kennon, secretary of the Board of Directors. The next honoree was Betty Frances and was presented the 2013 Golden Senior Award by Harold Matzner. Part 2 of the entertainment was again by FlowBox circus troop.

Dan McGrath and Dick Shaloub took on the duties of auctioneer for a live auction of 2 items. The final honoree was The 22nd Annual Good Samaritan of the Year award. That award went to Robert Pond, in memoriam, and his wife Jo Pond. Jo Pond was introduced by Suzanne Armstrong and Jo Anne Kennon. All honorees were escorted to the stage by Doug Morin CEO.

The final Entertainer was Hillel The Balloon man. His comedic routine included bringing some of the men in the audience to the stage. Hillel proceeded to ask the men to do hilarious things all without speaking a word. He motioned to 2 of the men to come forward and pretend to swing a jump rope and had the other men pretend to jump that rope with him.
The men were given a huge applause. Hillel then did his ballon tricks where he went inside a very large balloon.

“Exquisite Potential” by playwright Stephan Kaplan, is having its West Coast Premiere at Dezart Performs in the Pearl McManus Theatre in Palm Springs.   The comedy drama is one of two plays that ended in a tie as “audience favorite” from Dezart Performs annual staged play reading festival in April of this year.  The winner receives a fully produced production (set, light, costumes, props, sound, etc.) in the Fall of each year following the April Festival.

The result now is audiences will have the pleasure of seeing two fully produced shows.  “Exquisite Potential” will be presented on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pmand Sundays at 2:30 pm through December 1st, on the Pearl McManus stage at the Palm Springs Women’s Club.

But, now back to “Exquisite Potential” directed by Joan McGillis.  It’s a clever, funny, two-act, light comedy/drama, with religious overtones about an ordinary New York City Jewish family where the husband Alan Zuckerman (Michael Shaw) believes his three-year old son David is the Messiah.  The mother Laura (Adina Lawson) definitely does not.  What’s a family to do in this dilemma?  Why consult Rabbi Gary Gerber (Scott Smith) for answers and guidance, of course.  Between these three characters in Act One we get a quick overview of the Old Testament, sprinkled with a lot of ethnic humor, clever dialogue, and food for thought on tolerance and diversity.  The three adults agree to remain silent concerning David; allowing the boy to grow up and have a normal childhood and forget all about this Messiah thing.

In Act Two the play switches gears.   It’s thirty years later.  David (played by Shaw) is now a worldwide TV celebrity.  He’s gay, married, with a son Emmet (an adorable six-year-old Makai Armstrong Ross) to David Gerber, son of his father’s old friend, Rabbi Gary Gerber.  Rabbi Gary Gerber – now in his sixties – is wonderfully played by Garnett Smith.  There are twists and turns in the second act that need to be seen and heard by an audience in a theatre, not in a review.  No spoiler alert here (accept for a bunch of f-bombs hurled from the stage every now and then).

The cast is uniformly solid, but the showier parts give a frustrated, but resigned to his fate, Michael Shaw the lion’s share of the humor and to his foil Garnett Smith as the elder Rabbi.  Adina Lawson as the wife and playing her daughter Beth in Act Two has some nice comedy moments.  Scott Smith as the young Rabbi and as David’s husband nicely juggles his two roles.

The Dezart Performs Festival Winner production “Exquisite Potential” runs through December 1st.
