US intelligence warning allies about sensitive Snowden leaks yet to be published – report

0

American officials have begun advising US allies that the ongoing National Security Agency disclosures made possible by whistleblower Edward Snowden include files detailing cooperation between their international intelligence services.

US officials told The Washington Post that Snowden leaked documents indicating massive intelligence gathering efforts against sometimes hostile countries, including China, Russia and Iran. Those files contain evidence linking other countries, ones that may want to keep their cooperation with the US quiet, to such data collection.

Other countries’ military capabilities – details on weapons, missiles, ships and jets, among others – are included in the information in question, not surveillance.

This news comes after the NSA was accused of secretly monitoring sympathetic leaders, among them German Chancellor Angela Merkel, whose personal phone may have been tapped. As such, US intelligence has struggled in recent weeks to keep allies happy while keeping operations that rely on allies in motion.

“It is certainly a concern, just as much as the US collection [against European allies] being put in the news, if not more, because not only does it mean we have the potential of losing collection, but also of harming relationships,” an unnamed congressional aide told the Post.

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence is undertaking the task of informing international foreign services how they could have been inadvertently compromised. The already unenviable job is further complicated by the fact that, in many countries, one government agency is responsible for cooperating with the US while other departments are likely in the dark.

Among the difficulties in question is an operation against Russia overseen by a NATO country which then supplies the data collected to the US Air Force, Army, Navy and Marines, according to the Post report.

“If the Russians knew about it, it wouldn’t be hard for them to take appropriate measures to put a stop to it,” one official admitted.

Officials estimate that Snowden took approximately 30,000 documents from the Defense Intelligence Agency, which is frequently used by different branches of the armed services. And while US authorities have been investigating under the assumption that Snowden provided material to hostile governments, the former NSA contractor has denied that assertion and said more than once that he wishes to do no harm to the US.

There’s a zero percent chance the Russians or Chinese have received any documents,” Snowden told The New York Times.

Thomas Drake, a former NSA executive turned whistleblower, was among a small group of civil liberty advocates who met with Snowden in Moscow this month.

He’s made it quite clear that he was not going to compromise legitimate national intelligence and national security operations,” Drake said. “It’s telling that he did not give anything to WikiLeaks.”

Drake added that none of the documents the US is currently warning other nations about have been published yet.

Strains developed as a result of Snowden’s leaks were already on display Thursday as Brazil and Germany announced a joint effort to pass a United Nations General Resolution that would be the first notable international effort to rein in the NSA’s monitoring of foreign online communications. Like Germany’s claim that Merkel was the subject of surveillance, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff has spent months condemning NSA intrusions into Brazil as “a breach of international law.”

Diplomats from both countries sat down in New York Thursday with officials from Latin American and other European governments to discuss a draft resolution that would expand the privacy rights outlined in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights adopted in the 1960s into the internet age. The document did not specifically mention the NSA, according to Foreign Policy magazine, yet the insinuation seemed clear.

This is an example of the very worst aspects of the Snowden disclosures,” an anonymous defense official said. “It will be very difficult for the US to dig out of this, although we will over time. The short term costs in credibility and trust are enormous.”

Intense Action Thriller Of Piracy At Sea A Nail-Biting Must See

0

Two-time Academy Award winner Tom Hanks, is an amazing protean actor who apparently can do just about anything he sets his mind to.  From a boyish-looking actor in his first TV series in “Bosom Buddies, to a fine maturing actor in light fare rom/com movies like “Big”; “A League of Their Own”;  “Sleepless in Seattle” and “You’ve Got Mail” to more dramatic films like “Apollo 13”; “Saving Private Ryan”; “Philadelphia” and “Forest Gump”, and now  “Captain Phillips”.    His films over the years have grossed over $8 Billion worldwide making him the highest all time box office movie star.

8-webThe proof of his incredible acting skills and winning style is once again put to the test in his latest film “Captain Phillips” playing the real-life skipper of the merchant ship Maersk Alabama that was hi-jacked in 2009 by Somali pirates.  Directed by Paul Greengrass (“Bourne” franchise helmer) with a screenplay by Billy Ray, based on the book “A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALS, and Dangerous Days at Sea” by Richard Phillips, and Stephen Talty is a high-octane action film that keeps its audience riveted to the screen throughout it’s 2 hour 15 minutes running time (I think it could lose 12 minutes and still hold everyone’s attention, it’s that engrossing).

As good as Hanks is, and he’s very good, he shares the screen with first time actors: Barkhad Abdi as Muse, the leader of the pirates; Barkhad Abdirahman as Bilal, the loose cannon of the four, Faysal Ahmed as Najee, and Mahat M. Ali as Elmi, the teenaged pirate. The quartet of first time non- actors, so to speak, were cast as a result of answering a newspaper casting call for Somalis to appear in a movie.   Auditions were held in Minneapolis/St Paul, home to the largest enclave of Somalis living in the USA.

3-webThe movie is based on “real events” which is an important code word used in Hollywood when a dramatic makeover takes place; sometime trumping what actually took place.  After the movie was released some of the real crew groused that the events didn’t quite unfold as portrayed in the film, going on to say, the Captain comes out as too much of a hero.  Ah, there’s nothing Hollywood enjoys more than a little controversy as a way of ramping up the publicity machine.  Despite the chatter from outside forces, “Captain Phillips” is still a riveting, splendidly acted, and well crafted film about piracy on the high seas.

The story of how the Maersk Alabama Skipper and crew vs Somali pirates resolved this “incident movie” is in the details of how brilliantly director Greengrass and his crew recreate and capture the essence of piracy at sea and its inherent dangers lurking off the Somali coast, as well as suspense and danger involved when the ship is boarded by the pirates as they search for the ship’s crew.  They push the intensity level to the max leaving little room for exhausted patrons to regroup before exiting the theatre.

The Somali pirates have such wonderfully expressive faces and render their scenes with Hanks and each other with frightening reality.  As usual, Hanks delivers the goods in spades with consummate skill, possibly garnering another Oscar nomination in the effort.

His scene following his rescue in the ship’s medical quarters is possibly the finest portrayal of a man coming out of shock and his attempt to figure out what has just taken place is both stunning and mesmerizing.   It alone is the worth the price of admission.

If you have wondered why movies today cost so much to make consider the following:  “Captain Phillips” involved over three hundred actors, writers, and technicians, etc. in the making of the film.  There are 111 visual artists, 81 camera and technician employees, 44 sound department crews, just for starters.  When one adds the stars’ salaries to this production and then add million dollar plus marketing campaigns to the mix, well, now you have some idea of why movies cost so much.  The upside to all this back-story about production costs comes down to this.  The cost is well worth the effort.  Director Greengrass has delivered one heck of an exciting and entertaining movie.

“Captain Phillips” opened nationwide on October 15, 2013.

• Richard Attenborough and his fellow film-star and beloved wife, Sheila Sim took the leading roles when the production opened at The Ambassadors Theatre in 1952. It played there for 21 years and moved to the adjacent St Martin’s Theatre in 1973 without missing a performance. The Mousetrap holds numerous Guinness World Records including ‘the longest continuous run of any show in the world’

• The Mousetrap has been thrilling audiences from around the world for as long as HRH Queen Elizabeth II has been on the throne.

• Since The Mousetrap opened, 411 actors and 239 understudies have appeared in the play.

• Sir Peter Saunders was the producer of all of Agatha Christie’s plays, including The Mousetrap, which he sold to Sir Stephen Waley-Cohen in 1994.

• There have been productions of The Mousetrap in 50 languages, and there is rarely a night without a performance somewhere in the world, but there have never before been so many productions deliberately licensed in the same period.

“Girltrash!”

0

Los Angeles, CA – Award-winning out writer/director, Angela Robinson, who’s written and produced the upcoming “Girltrash: All Night Long” as presented by POWER UP is severing all formal ties with the non-profit film company over creative differences and professional, moral and ethical issues.

Robinson, one of the executive producers of HBO’s “True Blood” and a co-executive producer of HBO’s “Hung” and Showtime’s “The L Word” – also known for directing the films “D.E.B.S.” & “Herbie: Fully Loaded,” has released an official statement today withdrawing any and all endorsements, affiliations and support of “Girltrash: All Night Long” as presented by POWER UP.

Robinson’s refusal to have her name associated with the POWER UP version of the film publicly casts light on a behind-the-scenes dispute between the acclaimed filmmaker and Stacy Codikow (founder & Executive director), which has been smoldering in recent months.

Since its inception in 2000, POWER UP, a Non-Profit Film Production Company & Educational Organization for Women and the GLBTQ Community, has over the years earned praise and name recognition for producing & financing LGBT films and conducting educational programs through its filmmaking mentorships, and seminars.

Adhering to its ethos and professional endeavors, Robinson initially partnered with the non-profit company to produce the prequel to her hugely popular web-series “Girltrash”, which she originally created & produced.  Girltrash: All Night Long stars Gabrielle Christian (South of Nowhere), Michelle Lombardo (Quarterlife), Mandy Musgrave (South of Nowhere), Lisa Rieffel (lead singer of Killola), Rose Rollins (L word), Kate French (One Tree Hill) and Clementine Ford (L word).  However, Robinson’s partnership with POWER UP and overall experience in the course of making and producing the film did not live up to the filmmaker’s understanding of POWER UP’s advertised standards.

Robinson’s decision to speak out on the issue comes on the heels of POWER UP’s current announcement of the (unauthorized) private screening in Palm Springs scheduled for Thursday, October 24, and the press release publicizing the upcoming December 15th DVD release of the film through Power Up.

Angela Robinson released the following official statement:

“Girltrash!” is a project close to my heart.

I was trying to find a way to make affordable, quality lesbian entertainment and develop a brand that would encompass web series, movies, television, graphic novels and stage musicals.  To this end, after first making a web series and a penning a graphic novel, I produced “Girltrash: All Night Long” with Stacy Codikow.

I love the movie and each and every person that tirelessly worked on this project – the crew and mentees that donated their time and energy for free or for cut rates, the incredible musicians, Lisa Rieffel and Johnny Dunn, who wrote fantastic songs, the awesome actors who worked all night long for months on end, Luke Tierney, the composer and Chris Hill, the editor, and of course, Alex Kondracke, the amazing director. I am extremely proud of the work that was done.

But POWER UP is presenting a version of the film that I have not seen, that is unfinished and that has not been creatively approved by me and as a result, I do not support nor validate any screenings or commercial sales of “Girltrash: All Night Long” at this time.

Working with Stacy Codikow and POWER UP has been, without a doubt, the worst experience of my career. Because Stacy has been so horrible I will never again be involved in any project in which Stacy Codikow or POWER UP is involved.

Top spying fallout: EU summit promises NSA thunder, data-protection storm

0

merkel_phoneAhead of the EU summit in Brussels, Germany’s Angel Merkel and France’s Francois Hollande have discussed wiretapping of their communications by America’s NSA. The scandal could push a frustrated EU to change data privacy rules.

The EU summit starting Thursday is expected to be hijacked by recent revelations provided by the former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, which infuriated both Berlin and Paris.

On the same day the summit kicks off, Germany announced it had information that allied US National Security Service had monitored Chancellor Angela Merkel’s personal phone. Earlier, France learnt from reports in Le Monde that the NSA has been recording dozens of millions of phone calls, including those of the French authorities.

Spying between friends ‘just not done’

The fallout from the revelations was prompt and direct. Merkel, on arriving for a two-day EU summit in Brussels, said that such conduct between friends was unacceptable.

Spying between friends – that’s just not done,” she said as quoted by the Associated Press.

I said that to US President Barack Obama when he came to Berlin and again on the phone (Wednesday),” Merkel said.

She added that trust between Washington and its partners has to be restored following the allegations.

We need trust between partners and such trust needs to be re-established,” Merkel said.

Earlier, the German chancellor made a phone call to US President Barack Obama to sort out if her phone was tapped, while Germany’s Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle summoned the US ambassador to explain the situation.

In a strongly-worded statement issued Wednesday, Merkel’s spokesman shared some details of the phone call with Obama. “She made clear that she views such practices, if proven true, as completely unacceptable and condemns them unequivocally,” the spokesman said.

Washington, which has been left at loggerheads with many of its allies due to Snowden’s revelations, deployed White House spokesman Jan Carney, who said that President Obama had done his best to reassure the German Chancellor, telling Merkel that the US “is not monitoring and will not monitor” her communications.

Carney also said that “the United States is not monitoring the communications of the [German] chancellor.”

But neither Obama nor Carney actually confirmed or denied that Merkel’s phone had been tapped previously.

I’m not in a position to comment publicly on every specific alleged intelligence activity,” Carney said.

The French government is similarly upset with Washington. President François Hollande has not said whether his personal phone has been hacked by Washington, but the report that in just one month, between December 10, 2012, and January 8, 2013, the NSA managed to record 70.3 million French phone calls could not be shrugged off.

President Hollande has insisted that the phone tapping must be on the Brussels summit’s agenda.

‘We want the truth’

Other European nations united behind Germany and France as the spying scandal overshadowed a key EU summit being held in Brussels.

Leaders of Italy, Belgium, Finland, Malta and other states said that Washington must provide an explanation over the allegations and Europe must take a joint stand to protect its citizens.

We want the truth,” Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta said.

The European Commission called for “a strong and united stand,” while its President Jose Manuel Barroso warned against a slide towards “totalitarianism”.

Data protection must apply no matter if it concerns the emails of citizens or the mobile phone of Angela Merkel,” he said.

Meanwhile, EU Parliament President Martin Schulz said he was not confident that German intelligence services were not spying on the White House.

I cannot be sure that German special services are not tapping Barack Obama,” he said, adding that “it would be interesting” to see Washington’s reaction if that was the case.

EU Justice Commissioner underlined that data protection should apply no matter whether it concerns the emails of citizens or Merkel’s mobile phone. “Now is the time for action and not only for declarations at the EU summit,” Viviane Reding said.

The 28 members of the EU could speed up the adoption of amendments to the bloc’s data protection rules, set in 1995, AFP reported Thursday.

This could seriously complicate life of American companies like Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Yahoo! and others that have been exposed as voluntarily sharing private data communications with the US secret services.

The new amendments would enable EU citizens to demand that IT companies erase traces of personal data from the internet. Stricter data protection rules would be applied to international electronic money transferring systems, such as the Europe-based SWIFT, also used by the US security agencies for collecting personal data on EU citizens.

In case the communication giants do not abide by the new regulations, fines could be as hefty as 100 million euros.

The potential regulations could make personal data collection in Europe impracticable financially. US communication giants have been furiously lobbying against the amendments.

Given the angry reactions of Berlin and Paris to US surveillance, the EU could put new data protection rules in place as early as 2015.
