‘No Monsanto!’: World marches against GMO food

0

Thousands took to streets across the world’s cities on Saturday to protest the use of GMO products, with Giant Monsanto being the main target. Over 50 countries have been taking part in the march for world food day, and across 47 different US states.

Berlin, Strasbourg, Chicago, London, Sydney and Mumbai are just a few of the 500 cities worldwide involved in the rallies, with each one drawing hundreds.

The demonstrators have been calling for the permanent boycott of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) and“other harmful agro-chemicals,” according to March Against Monsanto’s official webpage. Protesters wielded large banners denouncing GMO products, and donned fancy dress: In Washington DC a group dressed as bees to highlight the impact of insecticides on bee populations.

The rallies  come four days ahead of World Food Day on Oct. 16 and are a direct attack on what the organizers term Monsanto’s “predatory business,” genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and other harmful pesticides, which threaten “health, fertility and longevity.”

In Berlin, people expressed displeasure at the food giant for a number of reasons, ranging from long-term health concerns to the chemicals used in Monsanto products.

“There a Smartstax corn that Monsanto has made…it is a corn that resists six different types of herbicide, so you can spray it with six different chemicals and it won’t die,” Heidi Ostermannm, a nutritionist participating in the Berlin march told RT.

“It also produces two insecticides in its own kernels and you can’t wash it off – I don’t even know if technically that’s food. In my mind as a nutritionist, that’s no longer food,” she said.

Dietrich Wittel, vice president of the True Food Foundation cited experiments conducted on rats, bringing a large poster with him showing the tumors suffered by the animals subject to being fed Monsanto corn.

“There are subtle signs of organ damage even in 90 days. But in two years, the lifetime of a rat is shortened – they have massive organ damage, massive breast tumors in the female rats, and that is really, really frightening,” he said, going on to discuss the effects on larger animals.

“Recently, a study from Australia has shown that pigs that are fed these corn products get massive stomach ulcers…. we have a much longer lifespan that a rat. If we are waiting for cancer to show as a result of GMOs, we’ve got to wait,” he said.

October is a particularly significant month for US protesters, as Agent Orange Awareness Month is being promoted by the Children of Vietnam Veterans Health Alliance (COVVHA).

“Monsanto was one of the seven chemical companies who manufactured Agent Orange which was laced with one of the most deadly chemicals known to man, dioxin. Monsanto, the other six companies, and the U.S. government, are responsible for the slow burn genocide of Vietnam Veterans, their children and grandchildren,”March Against Monsanto alleged

‘Red alert’: Monster cyclone hits Indian coast, sends 440,000 fleeing

0

As one of the largest cyclones in India’s history has reached its eastern coast, prompting a national red alert and sending some 440,000 people scurrying for shelter, the first deaths have been reported.

Five people were killed in Odisha when trees uprooted by wind gusts fell on them, local media cited police officials as saying.

Wind speed up to 200 kilometers per hour in gusts, local officials say, according to AFP.

Cyclone Phailin is likely to be the strongest to hit India since 1999, when a deadly Orissa cyclone killed 10,000 people and caused $4.5 billion worth of damage. This cyclone may surpass that one, as it gathers strength over the warm water of the Bay of Bengal on its way toward land.

Heavy rain and strong winds of up to 220 kilometers per hour were already lashing the country’s eastern coast on Saturday morning as the cyclone approached. Television footage showed gusts of wind snapping branches from trees and residents of coastal villages flocking to shelters.8u

“This is one of the largest evacuations undertaken in India,” said Shashidhar Reddy, vice chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority. “We will be on a war footing.”

“We’ve been instructed by the government to use force in case people resist,” Pradipta Mohapatra, Orissa  state special relief commissioner, told AFP.

Paradip, a major port in Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, was closed and vessels ordered to sail to the open sea in the wake of the storm. Among them is an oil tanker holding about 2 million barrels of crude.

The US Navy’s weather service estimated the wind at sea was gusting at 314 kilometers per hour, with some forecasters comparing the cyclone to Hurricane Katrina, which devastated New Orleans in 2005.

As of morning, Phailin was filling most of the Bay of Bengal, satellite images showed. Once it hits the coast in the evening, it may trigger a 3.4-meter surge of sea levels, the India Meteorological Department said in a statement.

“The storm has high damage potential, considering windspeed,” Lakshman Singh Rathore, head of the weather department, said Friday.

Indian authorities warned of extensive damage to crops, older buildings and the power grid, as well as possible disruption of rail services.

“Pee In A Cup” Video Disneyland Not the Happiest Place on Earth For Patients and Their Families

ANAHEIM, Calif., Oct. 10, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Families of victims of prescription drug abuse, physician overprescribing, and medical malpractice called for mandatory drug testing of doctors today outside the California Medical Association’s convention at the Disneyland Hotel. The nonprofit, nonpartisan Consumer Watchdog group unveiled a mobile billboard truck showing “Pee In A Cup: The Musical, Part 1,” the first in a series of musical videos pressing for mandatory doctor drug testing inCalifornia. Pilots, bus drivers and even Disney employees are required to undergo mandatory drug testing, yet doctors, who hold patients’ lives in their hands, do not. A proposed ballot measure would require such testing.

Watch “Pee in A Cup: The Musical, Part 1” here: http://www.consumerwatchdog.org/pee

The video features a police officer, fireman and football player, all professions that are required to drug test, and stars “Dr. P. P.” who, like all physicians in California, does not undergo mandatory drug testing. It is the first in a series of 30-second videos that will be shown on a mobile billboard truck and released over the course of the weekend at the California Medical Association House of Delegates meeting at Disneyland. Portal A, a creative studio based in California, produced and will distribute the social videos for the web.

“Doctors are celebrating in fantasyland, but Disneyland is not the happiest place on earth for patients and their families who are at risk because California fails to hold overprescribing and drug abusing doctors accountable. Mandatory physician drug and alcohol testing, just like pilots, bus drivers and even athletes already undergo, is needed to catch dangerous doctors and keep California patients safe,” said Carmen Balber, executive director of Consumer Watchdog.

The California Medical Association weakened or killed a series of bills this year that would have increased protections against prescription drug abuse and overprescribing and strengthened accountability for dangerous doctors. The doctors’ lobby was responsible for deleting a provision from SB 809 that would have required physicians to check the state’s electronic prescribing database, CURES, for a patient’s prescription history before prescribing narcotics. SB 62, a bill to require coroners to report prescription drug overdose deaths to the Medical Board, was vetoed by the governor after a CMA lobbying push. SB 670 was gutted to eliminate provisions that gave the state Medical Board greater authority to impose temporary restrictions on physicians’ prescribing licenses when reckless or illegal prescribing practices pose a threat to patient health. SB 304 was meant to be the vehicle for broad reform of the doctor discipline system in California, but amendments backed by the medical establishment eliminated a key provision that would have moved all staff investigating dangerous doctors into the Department of Justice.

The families of drug abuse victims and medical negligence called on the physicians’ lobby to support mandatory doctor drug testing and stronger patient safety laws. Alex Smick, twenty-year-old son of Tim and Tammy Smick of Downey, lost his life after failures by three doctors that ended in a lethal overdose administered by medical providers at the very facility Alex had entered to seek treatment for prescription drug dependence at an Orange County Hospital. Alejandra Gonzalez of La Puente lost her six-week-old daughter Mia when doctors failed to diagnose whooping cough in the middle of a whooping cough epidemic.

“We are experiencing a prescription drug problem that has been deemed a national epidemic.  The medical community needs to step up and take responsibility for this problem as the only way these medications are made available is by the prescribing power of physicians.  We lose a life every 19 minutes in this country. This fact alone is completely unacceptable,” said Natalie Costa, producer of the documentary film “Behind the Orange Curtain,” about the prescription drug abuse epidemic in Orange County.

In addition to mandatory physician drug and alcohol testing, the Troy and Alana Pack Patient Safety Act, an initiative measure proposed for the November 2014 ballot, would require doctors to report colleagues who are under the influence while on duty, check patient histories before prescribing narcotics to help identify drug abusers, and would update the state’s 38-year-old cap on malpractice victims’ recovery mandatory.

Consumer Watchdog released a list of the physicians who contributed to the opponents of the ballot measure. See the list here: http://www.consumerwatchdog.org/your-doctor-list

Demystifying the debt ceiling: 5 things you should know

0

As the US government is about to hit its so-called debt ceiling of $16.7 trillion on Oct. 17, the frightening prospect of the world’s biggest economy running out of cash is dominating headlines around the globe.

So, in an effort to shine some light on what exactly thedebt ceiling means to all of us, Business RT spoke to leading Moscow financial expert Chris Weafer, a senior partner at Macro-Advisory.com.

What exactly is the “debt ceiling?”

The US debt ceiling has existed for almost a century, and describes the maximum amount of money the US can legally borrow. The country introduced the legislative limit on its debt back in 1917, and since them it has stipulated the affordable amount of national debt that can be issued by the US Treasury. As of Sept. 25, the US Treasury reported federal government debt at just shy of $16.7 trillion ($16,699,396,000,000.00, to be exact) in its dailystatement, a figure which has been reported for 130 days straight. This is about $25 billion shy of the precise legal limit – $16,699,421,095,673.60. When the US approaches this debt limit, it can take some “extraordinary measures” to buy some time before Congress agrees to raise the ceiling. In its entire history, the US has so far never reached the point of default, where Treasury can’t pay its debt obligations.

 Who holds the US debt?

The US owes about two-thirds of its debt to US-based creditors, with almost 66 percent of the country’s debt held domestically. US individuals and financial institutions hold around 31.7 percent of US Treasuries, with the US central bank, the Federal Reserve, which holds some 12 percent of the debt. Foreign creditors, including China and Japan, own an estimated 34 percent of total US government debt. These two “big lender” countries have recently urged the US to take decisive steps to avoid a default.

3 What does the US borrow the money for?

In the US, often referred to as a “big-spending” country, both individuals and the government have habitually spent more than they earn, pushing the economy deeper into debt.“Just like any ordinary individual, the choice is either to cut back on spending or to borrow money to bridge the gap,” Weafer says.

In 2012, 22 percent of total government expenditures went to social security (means-tested payments to the poor and unemployed), while 21 percent was spent on health care, again mostly for poor Americans who cannot afford private health insurance. The third largest expenditure item is defense at 19 percent. In recent decades, the US defense bill has ballooned, mainly due to costly wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere. The so-called “War on Terror” has also added greatly to the debt burden, while the Department of Homeland Security, created after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the US, has cost taxpayers more than a cumulative $800 billion.

The biggest contributory factor to the fast-growing debt mountain in recent years, however, has been the economic crisis that began in 2008. Apart from hundreds of billions of dollars paid out to rescue failing Wall Street banks that had made too many toxic loans, the US government has also paid out large amounts on vital social programs to aid the growing “army of the unemployed.” Coupled with the Bush-era tax cuts to the rich and big business, lower average incomes and greater unemployment have hit government tax revenues hard, sending federal government debt sky-high.

Why can’t they simply print more dollars and pay their debt?

No economy in the world can simply turn on its printing presses and create as much cash as it wishes, as this would make its currency worthless. “If the amount of currency in issue is not sensibly related to the strength of the economy, then foreign trade partners will … devalue the currency quickly,” Weafer explains. “If you have one asset and income source which allows you to issue one dollar, and then you print one more dollar, everybody else will see what you have done and will value your one dollar at only fifty cents. Some countries have done that in the past, but in those cases people soon had to use suitcases just to carry enough currency to buy a loaf of bread.”

Under the Bretton Woods financial system, established in 1944, the amount of currency in circulation was linked to gold reserves. But in 1971, the US abandoned this system and started to include a number of other economic factors, based on a recognized ability to service debt and prevent inflation, and maintain orderly trade with the rest of the world.

5 How would a US default affect people around the world, on a macro and personal level?

If the US defaulted, then the world’s financial system“would start to freeze up,” Weafer says. “Banks would pull back from risk and lending. The US economy would slide towards recession and the global economy would quickly be affected.” A prolonged US default would lead to job losses everywhere and much tougher borrowing conditions for companies and individuals, he adds.

“A short period of default would also have a bad effect in that it would hurt confidence in the world’s financial system,” he says. “Bankers and investors would assume that a short-term fix in the US would mean it would only be a matter of time before the same issue arises again in 2014. The resulting caution would make life that much tougher for all of us.”

Epic fail: just 1 percent of Obamacare requests successfully processed

0

Millions of Americans visited newly launched websites last week to learn more about the benefits offered through the president’s health insurance mandate, but Obamacare is apparently not ready for everyone.

Americans officially became able to sign up for insurance coverage provided through President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act program Tuesday morning, but a number of issues have impacted the amount of people who are actually able to sign up for so-called Obamacare.

Heavy traffic early in the week caused many of the websites to reportedly crash, but complications are continuing to plague some pages. A report conducted by CNBC suggests that as few as one percent of those online applications were actually submitted correctly.

As few as 1 in 100 applications on the federal exchange contains enough information to enroll the applicant in a plan,” CNBC health care reporter Dan Mangan wrote Friday.

According to several insurance industry sources who spoke to CNBC during the first week of Obamacare’s roll-out, a number of complications are causing the vast majority of submitted applications to be absent of the information necessary to implement coverage.

But while user error would presumably be the main culprit, some experts are saying the websites established to register Americans for the president’s health care plan were brimming with internal problems.

It is extraordinary that these systems weren’t ready,” Sumit Nijhawan, CEO of Infogix, told CNBC.

According to Nijhawan, whose company handles data processing for insurers such as WellPoint and Cigna, there will be a “public relations nightmare” if the Obama administration can’t correct the issues that are complicating the sign-up process. If a large number of people wrongly believe they have new insurance when it officially goes into effect in January, he said, the response could be damaging for the White House.

One hundred people submit their application, one of them goes all the way through the processing … a big chunk of them are being held,” Infogix Chief Product Officer Bobby Koritala added to CNBC. “They need to get more clarifying information.”

Dan Mendelson, the CEO of consulting firm Avalere Health, added to Mangang’s report that he wasn’t surprised by the 1-in-100 rate cited by Nijhawan.

This is not a traffic issue,” Mendelson said. “Right now, the systems aren’t working.”

Dan Schuyler, director of the consultancy Leavitt Partners, added that “If we continue to see these issues through the next three or four weeks there’s a lot of concern about how many people will have effective coverage by Jan. 1.”

According to the New York Times, around 8.6 million people visited the new Obamacare websites last week. Before long, however, the Department of Health and Human Services had to take the website down during off-leak hours in order to provide “significant improvements in the online consumer experience.”

We have built a dynamic system and are prepared to make adjustments as needed and improve the consumer experience,” HHS spokeswoman Joanne Peters said in a statement.

Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Virginia), the second-highest ranking Republican in the House of Representatives, said in a statement of his own that “Americans have seen once again that Obamacare is not ready for prime time.”

We have been warned time and time again that ObamaCare is not ready for prime time,” independently added Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-Kansas). “Well, it turns out that is right.”

Republican efforts to stall Obamacare largely led to the government shutdown that started last Tuesday morning. GOP members of the House opposed approving any budget that funds the health insurance program, but Obamacare rolled out regardless early Tuesday just as hundreds of thousands of federal workers became furloughed over Congress’ failure to pass a spending bill.

According to the White House, healthcare.gov was visited by one million unique visitors within hours of its launch last week. Americans have until Dec. 15 to enroll in the president’s health insurance plan.

In the first week, first month, first three months, I would suspect that there will be glitches,” Pres. Obama told NPR recently. “This is 50 states, a lot of people, signing up for something. And there are gonna be problems.”
