Sochi 2014 Flame lit in Olympia kicking off record-breaking torch relay

0

Kindled by the sun’s rays, the Olympic torch was lit on Sunday in the ancient Greek city of Olympia. In a ceremony filled with mystery and tradition, the torch began its 65,000-kilometer journey to the Opening Ceremony of the Sochi Winter Olympics 2014.

The ceremony included a theatrical performance in the ancient Temple of Hera during which priestesses asked the Greek God Apollo to send the sun’s rays to earth to light the flame of the Olympic Games. The main condition of the ceremony is the absence of any artificial sources of fire. The Olympic Torch is always lit using the sun’s rays, reflected on a large parabolic mirror which is used to symbolize the approval of the Gods to host the games.

Apart from the main torch, the flame also lit special lamps to store the Olympic fire in case the main flame or even a fire at the Games themselves will go out for any reason.

After the flame was kindled women dancers performed the ancient “Dance of the Nymphs” and male dancers the“Feast dance without weapons”, signifying the rejection of hostilities during the Olympic Games.

“We hope that the light sends a message to all the countries about the Olympic truce,” the choreographer of the ceremony told RT.

The flame was handed to the first torchbearer, Greece’s 18-year-old alpine skier Ioannis Antoniou. Once he finishes his stretch of the relay, Antoniouwill pass the symbol of the modern Olympics to the first Russian relay runner, the ice hockey star Aleksandr Ovechkin.

250 torchbearers will carry the flame 2,000 kilometers through 33 towns and 23 regions of Greece until October 5, when it arrives at the old Olympic stadium in Athens, the site of the first modern Games in 1896, where the Russian delegation of the 2014 Sochi winter games will receive the torch.

The Russian route, which is expected to last 123 days, will start on October 6 in the capital Moscow.

The marathon will be the longest in the history of the Winter Games, with 14,000 runners are scheduled to carry the torch through 2,900 towns across Russia’s 83 regions by car, train, plane, Russian troika and reindeer sleigh, said head of the Sochi 2014 organizing committee Dmitry Chernyshenko on Saturday.

“In Russia, the torch will be lowered into the water of the Lake Baikal and will visit the highest point in Europe Mount Elbrus,” said Chernyshenko, adding that to the North Pole the Olympic flame will be delivered on a nuclear icebreaker.

Ninety percent of the Russian population will be within an hour’s reach of the Relay, he added.

The Sochi 2014 committee  also confirmed that the torch will be the first in history to travel in space, approximately 400km to the International Space Station (ISS) on board of the Soyuz TMA-11M manned spaceship.

“Nobody has done this before. The spacewalk by two Russian cosmonauts with the Sochi 2014 Olympic torch will be a historic moment in the history of the Olympic torch relay,” said head of the organizing committee at a press conference dedicated to the event.

The runners humbled by the experience will deliver the flame to the host city of Sochi on February 7 on the opening day of the Winter Games to a worldwide television audience of billions.

PALM SPRINGS – Local World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion Timothy “Desert Storm” Bradley appeared at the opening of an acclaimed new film, “The Trials of Muhammad Ali,” at the Camelot Theatres on Sept. 11.

The Cathedral City native felt honored to be asked to address the audience prior to the showing of the documentary about the life and career of the world’s greatest boxer.

“The Trials of Muhammad Ali” follows the sometimes rocky rise and tribulations of the famous fighter who captured three heavyweight championship titles. Ali saw his share of controversy, changing his name from Cassius Clay to Muhammad Ali in the 1960s when he converted to Islam. He remained loyal to his beliefs when he went against the law and the U.S. in refusing to fight in the Viet Nam War and was sentenced to five years in prison. The sentence was eventually overturned and he returned to boxing. In addition to being a prize-winning pugilist, Ali, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s syndrome in 1984 and turned 71 this year, is a humanitarian, actor, author and father to nine children.

Bradley, who is undefeated and whose next big match to defend his WBO title is against Juan Manuel Marquez in Las Vegas on Oct. 12, is a hero and role model in the eyes of Coachella Valley youngsters — particularly those in the Boys and Girls Clubs, with whom he often works.

Bradley spoke about his admiration and respect for Ali, and how Ali influenced his own career direction — discussing many of the events in the famous boxer’s life. He recounted how Ali got into boxing after someone stole his bike at age 12.

“He wanted to whup the thief but had to learn to box first,” Bradley said. “It was the beginning of a huge career.”

Bradley also respected Ali’s choice to adhere to his religious beliefs, despite the consequences. He also noted Ali’s influence in the civil rights movement and how the boxer fought corruption in the world of boxing promotion.

Fans of Bradley, including many members of the Boys and Girls Clubs, greeted him as he arrived at the Camelot. Some wanted autographs or photos, while others just wanted to shake his hand.

Bradley brought his wife Monica and daughter Alaysia with him to the theater. Prior to the screening, he met with philanthropists and Camelot owners Ric and Rozene Supple, who are also members of the Palm Springs Cultural Center.

Moms Demand Action For Gun Sense In America Successfully Pressures Starbucks To Stop Allowing Guns In Stores

INDIANAPOLIS, Sept. 18, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America launched a campaign pressuring Starbucks to eliminate guns from its stores nationwide in early July. Just two months later, Starbucks is announcing that the company will no longer allow guns on its property, both inside and outside of its stores. Until now, Starbucks allowed patrons to bring loaded firearms inside stores in states where concealed and open carry is permitted. According to Starbucks’ new policy, which goes into effect today, “Everyone is welcome in our stores, but weapons are not.”

“This is a huge win for American moms who fought for this policy change, which will make Starbucks customers safer. Because Starbucks is a business icon, this policy change represents a sea change in American culture, which is finally shifting away from allowing guns in public places,” said Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “Much like smoking was once accepted on airplanes and drunk driving was abided without severe penalties, it is becoming passe for gun advocates – who may or may not have background checks, training or permits – to bring their weapons to public places. We thank and congratulate Starbucks for making this decision and for taking the safety of our children and families as seriously as mothers do.”

Starbucks’ new policy stops short of a ban, and Moms Demand Action will continue to pressure the company if there are additional instances of accidental shootings and open carry rallies inside stores. However, in his open letter to Americans (http://www.starbucks.com/blog/an-open-letter-from-howard-schultz/1268), Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz makes it clear that only law officers should have guns inside stores going forward: “…today we are respectfully requesting that customers no longer bring firearms into our stores or outdoor seating areas – even in states where “open carry” is permitted – unless they are authorized law enforcement personnel.”

“Moms Demand Action believes Starbucks is just the first of many companies that will codify a “no guns allowed” policy, and our organization will lead the charge in ensuring American businesses and institutions respect and support gun safe environments,” said Watts. “Moms and women oversee nearly 80 percent of household spending, and Moms Demand Action is going to make sure they spend those dollars at businesses and institutions that respect and support the safety of our children and families.”

Moms Demand Action’s corporate responsibility initiative asks American moms to support companies and businesses that: Don’t allow guns in their establishments, regardless of what state laws permit; don’t sell assault weapons; don’t sponsor or partner with gun lobby organizations; and don’t support or fund legislative efforts to loosen federal or state gun laws. Israel has 80 nukes, can about triple inventory – report

0

Israel has never confirmed or denied possession of nuclear weapons, but according to new report by US experts it has at least 80 operative warheads and has enough material to produce up to 190 more.

In a report published in the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, nuclear weapon proliferation experts Robert S. Norris and Hans M. Kristensen assess that Israel stopped producing nuclear warheads back in 2004 once it reached around 80 munitions.

However, the country can easily double its arsenal since it has enough fissile material to build at least another 115 bombs, experts say.

“There are rumors that Israel is equipping some of its submarines with nuclear-capable cruise missiles,” thereport says, echoing the 2013 Stockholm International Peace Research Institute yearbook on armament and international security which also suggested Israel could have nuclear-capable submarine-launched cruise missiles and reported the same assessment of nuke stockpiles.

The suspicions were fueled by the fact that Germany supplied Israel with five Dolphin-class submarines, allegedly capable of launching nuclear missiles, and signed a contract to build a sixth.

It remains unknown how many nuclear warheads of the total inventory could already be deployed, as Israel continues to maintain its long-standing policy of nuclear opacity. In December 2012, Israel once again dismissedthe latest demand from the members of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons to join the accord.

Israeli stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction have come under unusual scrutiny following the US-Russian roadmap for the destruction of Syrian chemical weapons, which is seen as a significant step towards a WMD-free region.

Recently declassified CIA documents suggest that Israel secretly built up its own stockpile of chemical and biological weapons decades ago. This has added more fuel to the lingering complaint of Arab states, who constantly accuse Israel of possessing nuclear weapons. Israel remains one of just seven countries which has never ratified the Chemical Weapons Convention as well.

In his speech on Sunday before talks with US Secretary of State John Kerry, Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu said that “in any case, Israel must be poised and ready to defend itself, by itself, against any threat – and this capability and readiness are more important now than ever.”

North Carolina police shoot dead unarmed car crash victim

A North Carolina policeman has been detained after shooting dead an unarmed African-American man, who was trying to get help following a car crash.

On Saturday morning, three police officers in Charlotte, NC responded to a 911 call from a woman, who said that an unknown male was knocking on the door of her house, the local media reports.

When the patrol arrived at the scene, the man – later identified as Jonathan Farrell, 24 – rushed at the officers, causing them to believe that he may be dangerous.

The policemen tried to neutralize the suspect with a Taser, but when it didn’t work out, one of them used his gun, firing several shots.

Farrell died of his wounds on sight. The body search revealed that he had no weapon on him.

Several hours later a wrecked car belonging to the deceased man was discovered at a nearby embankment.

The crash was serious as Farrell had to climb out of the back window of the vehicle, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief, Rodney Monroe, said.

Monroe stressed at a news conference that he didn’t think that the victim was trying to rob the woman, who called the police.

“I don’t believe threats were made,” the law enforcement chief is cited as saying by AP.

The investigators suggest that Farrell, who used to be a football player at Florida A&M University, may have been involved in an accident and was knocking on a nearby houses in order to get help.

Officer Randall Kerrick, 24, was arrested and charged with voluntary manslaughter for shooting the unarmed victim.

Kerrick, who has been with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police since April 2011, is “pretty shook up” and “devastated” by what has happened, Monroe added.

The two other policemen on the scene have been placed on paid administrative leave until the investigation of the tragic incident concludes.

FBI admits to exploiting Tor to take down child porn behemoth

0

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has acknowledged it was behind the malware that infiltrated the servers for Freedom Hosting, one of the largest providers of anonymity online, and identified the service’s users.

Internet security experts have long suspected the FBI was behind the cyber-attack, which appeared to target and monitor internet users on Freedom Hosting, which provided hosting for even more anonymous, so-called “hidden services” on the Tor anonymity network. While some users signed up with Freedom Hosting to encrypt their email and everyday Internet use, the FBI alleges that the service became “the largest facilitator of child porn on the planet.”

Eric Eoin Marques, a US-born 28-year-old living in Dublin, Ireland, is accused of being the chief architect behind Freedom Hosting, responsible for hosting child porn on 550 servers throughout Europe. Freedom Hosting is also accused of providing services for money-laundering operations, fraud fronts, and child abuse discussion boards with names like Lolita City and PedoEmpire, according to The Independent.

Marques is wanted in the US for four charges in connection with images on the websites, described as brutal depictions of the rape and torture of underage children.

The FBI’s involvement was acknowledged for the first time Thursday during a bail hearing in Dublin, where Marques is fighting extradition to the United States. He was denied bail for the second time since his arrest in July.

Investigators have not commented on the case but local press accounts reported that FBI Supervisory Special Agent Brooke Donahue testified in court that Marques dove for his laptop when agents raided his home this summer. A forged passport was found in Marques’ possession and his interest in Russia was piqued when NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden first entered the headlines.

My suspicion is he was trying to look for a place to reside to make it the most difficult to be extradited to the US,” Donahue said, as quoted by the Irish Independent. “He was looking the engage in financial transactions with another hosting company in Russia.”

Marques’ lawyer refused comment to reporters but Wired reported he is facing federal charges in Maryland, where his indictment is under seal. Donahue said that gravity of the charges could mean Marques will “spend the rest of his life in prison.”

Hackers from the Anonymous collective levied a distributed-denial-of-service attack against Freedom Hosting in 2011. Normally advocates of privacy and freedom online, Anonymous asserted that it determined Freedom Hosting hosted 95 per cent of the child porn web pages on the Tor network. Donahue said Thursday that Freedom Hosting facilitated at least 100 sites, each with thousands of users, and Marques himself was a frequent visitor.

Marques has not admitted to being the leader of Freedom Hosting and his father told The Sunday Times that any reports indicating the contrary were only “speculation.” He did admit in court Thursday that he had earned “substantial” sums of money from his involvement with the network.

It is not known when the FBI initially gained access to Freedom Hosting but the network went down on August 4. The key piece of malware used in the hack is known as the Magneto code variable, which does not download anything but accesses the “victim’s MAC address – a unique hardware identifier for the computer’s network or WiFi card – and the victim’s Windows hostname,” according to Wired.

That information then bypassed Tor and was sent back to servers housed in Northern Virginia, fueling speculation that the FBI or National Security Agency were the culprits.  The software is also consistent with the FBI’s computer and internet protocol address verifier (CIPAV), which law enforcement has used to subvert anonymity software belonging to hackers, extortionists, sexual predators, and others since 2002.
