0

Eurozone unemployment levels have hit 12 percent – the highest in the history of eurozone record-keeping, since the currency was launched in 1999.

The average unemployment rate across the eurozone’s 17 constituent European Union countries rose from January’s 11.9 percent high to 12 per cent in February, meaning a further net 33,000 people were left out of work. Overall, 19.071 million are jobless across Europe.

Some countries, including Spain and Greece suffered unemployment rates as high as 26 percent over the month of February.

Bitcoin Versus Government: Is Bitcoin the new gun rights battle?

Google trends shows an explosive growth in the Bitcoin meme. Like a tsunami, it started as a ripple and didn’t look like much, traveling for miles on the digital sea, and then Cyprus hit and the ripple became a roar.

Nearly all financial news outlets and blogs have weighed in with their opinion on Bitcoin; the majority indicating they either like or love the idea with a few dissenters. The dissenters keep coming back to the argument that Bitcoin’s success is capped by how far the government will allow it to succeed before stepping in and calling time.

Is government prohibition a concern for Bitcoin?

I don’t think the timing of Bitcoin’s appearance is a coincidence in that it appeared when many believe the government, and in particular the US government, has been stepping in and calling time too often. The Patriot Act, NDAA, and DHS are clear examples of government overreach and many argue that the ‘checks and balances’ built into the US Constitution are, over decades of specialist interest group erosion, failing to protect us from the interests of monopolists and warmongers.

Is pro-Bitcoin rights the new pro-gun rights?

The pro-gun advocates point to the 2nd amendment of America’s Constitution citing the right to bear arms as a protection against tyrants. Pro-Bitcoin advocates believe in protection against tyranny too. The difference is how the two groups define tyranny.

Curiously, for pro-gun rights, the threshold needed to be crossed that supposedly triggers a 2nd amendment response appears to have been violated many times since 9/11 with nary a peep. Whereas, pro-Bitcoin rights advocates, seeing the same chain of events, have rung the bell and are flooding the streets with a call to virtual currency arms.

Will Bitcoin, a stateless, decentralized, anonymous crypto-currency that has leaped in value from less than $1 mn to over $1 bn in just a few dozen months, succeed where the pro-gun rights advocates have failed – in protecting Americans, and people around the world – from an encroaching class of warmongering kleptocrats?

Looking at the response to deposit confiscation in Cyprus (or MF Global for that matter); by klepto-governments on behalf of corrupt TBTF bankers, the answer could be ‘Yes.’ If given the opportunity of preserving their wealth and independence or complying with crony capitalists bent on occupation and subjugation people tend to choose freedom over bondage. And Bitcoin enables that outcome.

Like America’s Minutemen of Revolutionary War fame, Bitcoin’ers are armed and ready to attack at a moment’s notice against the growing intolerance of the occupying monarchy. Everyone needs to have their Bitcoin plan of action ready in the face of financial tyranny.

China mobilizes military, on ‘high alert’ over N. Korea threats

China has started mobilizing military forces around the Korean peninsula in response to rising tensions that follow recent threats by North Korea to launch missile attacks against its southern neighbor and the United States.

According to US officials, Pyongyang’s declaration of a ‘state of war’ against South Korea has led to the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) to increase its military presence on the border with the North. The officials say the process has been going on since mid-March, and includes troop movements and readying fighter jets. The PLA is now at ‘Level One’ readiness, its highest.

Chinese forces, including tanks and armored personnel carriers, have been spotted in the city of Ji’an and near the Yalu River, which splits China and North Korea. Other border regions were also reportedly being patrolled by planes.

China has also been conducting live-firing naval exercises in the Yellow Sea, scheduled to end on Monday. The move is widely viewed as open support for North Korea, which continues to show extreme opposition to the US-South Korean military drills that are to last until May.

The news comes as the US deployed its USS Fitzgerald destroyer off the coast of North Korea, adding to its Sunday deployment of F-22 fighter jets to take part in the drills with the friendly South, which has further served to heighten tensions on the peninsula.

Meanwhile, North Korea has been mobilizing its short and medium-range missile arsenal, according to analyses of satellite imagery. Officials say Pyongyang is set to test its new KN-08 medium-range mobile missile; they say preparations have been spotted in the past. Pyongyang claims that since March 26, its forces have been placed on their highest possible status of alert.

Although officials believe Pyongyang will not provoke Seoul during the war games, they also fear that a miscalculation by South Korea could lead to all-out war, following its promise of retaliation against the North, should it launch its missiles first.

New malware goes directly to US ATMs and cash registers for card info

0

While many consumers already take precautions when shopping online, they may need to start being even more careful – as a new report shows malware is focusing on physical registers and ATMs compromised by attackers looking to harvest card data.

Research conducted by the Russian-based security company Group-IB recently discovered malware called “Dump Memory Grabber,” which it believes has already been used to steal debit and credit card information from customers using major US banks including Chase, Citibank and Capital One, Security Weekly reports.

The malicious code is evidently being installed directly into point-of-sale (POS) hardware (meaning registers or kiosks) and ATMs, and transmitting the harvested information straight out of the magnetic stripes on credit and debit cards – which includes everything from account numbers, to first and last names and expiration dates.

And just how are attackers infecting physical systems? Security researchers point to USB drives as the likely culprits, as modern register systems often have accessible ports, as well as direct connections to the Web.

According to Security Weekly, the harvested information can then be used to produce cloned cards, and they are likely succeeding with the help of individuals with direct access to the POS systems and ATMs – which could include employees.

Group-IB analyzed a video evidently posted by the coder behind Dump Memory Grabber, which includes stolen card numbers, and suggests he (or perhaps she) goes by the name “Wagner Richard,” and is likely inside Russia.

This is of course not the first time that attacks have been directed at physical machines like registers or bank ATMs, though using malware is a stealthier approach than physical “skimmer” ploys, which involve mouldings placed on top of the ATM card slots and keypads that log information from unsuspecting customers.

Researchers with Group-IB believe that Dump Memory Grabber is likely part of a larger cyber-crime gang, a Russian-offshoot of the amorphous Anonymous community, and include members in Ukraine and Armenia. In addition to this latest malware, the group is allegedly also for hire to carry out DDoS attacks.
