A number of top US grocery stores, including Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods, have pledged to reject selling the genetically engineered “frankenfish” if it is allowed on the market in April.

The mutant fish was engineered by scientists at a company called AquaBounty, which has spent more than 15 years and $50 million researching and perfecting the frankenfish. The mutants can grow to market size in 16-18 months, rather than the usual 30 months required for the Atlantic salmon. The Food and Drug Administration began its approval process in 2010, and in December decidedthat the fish is safe enough to be consumed.

The FDA is still conducting its final review of the genetically engineered salmon and retailers expect it to be on store shelves soon. But a coalition of consumer, health, food safety and fishing groups representing more than 2,000 US stores have taken a stand against GE fish and have pledged not to sell it, due to safety concerns and unanswered questions about consuming genetically engineered products.

Trader Joe’s, Aldi, Whole Foods, and Marsh are some of the stores that will refuse to put the frankenfish on its shelves.

“We won’t sell genetically engineered fish because we don’t believe it is sustainable or healthy,” Trudy Bialic from PCC Natural Markets in Washington State told Consumer’s Union. “It is troubling that the FDA is recommending approval of AquaBounty’s salmon as a ‘new animal drug,’ subjecting these engineered creatures to less rigorous safety standards than food additives. That’s not a credible safety assessment.”

Stores like Walmart, Costco and Safeway, however, have not expressed any opposition to selling the mutant salmon, which is likely to be cheaper due to its expedited growth.

The Indian Wells Tennis Gardens has already started breaking ground for the new addition to the facility with a new 8000 seat stadium 2 and 2000 new parking spaces. There was a ground breaking ceremony on March 6th with the promise that the new addition would be started as the BNP Barabas Open ended.

On hand for the ground breaking was owner Larry Ellison plus local dignitaries and top tennis players. Dignitaries included Mayor Mary Roche, and Indian Wells officials Raymond Moore and Steve Simon. 5 top tennis stars Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, winner of this years 2013 Open, Novak Djokovi, Ana Ivanovic and Victoria Azarenka.

Only one of these top players made the finals. That was the winner Rafael Nadal. The other players won many of their matches but failed to get to the final day of play. They did provide some of the most exciting matches of the tournament. The BNP Parabas Open broke records again this year with attendance over 320,000. Daily records were broke too as the weather was fantastic for the whole event.

With the new addition and new ideas I am sure Mr. Ellison is hoping to make this the top Tennis Championship in the nation. We have the weather, the facility, the staff, the dedicated owner and the desire to bring this tournament to the top of Tennis in the near future. The top tennis players love this tournament and will continue to play here.

One of the armored limousines in Barack Obama’s fleet has broken down after it was reportedly filled with diesel instead of petrol.

The malfunctioning limo was brought in especially for the visit from Washington and is the first unforeseen incident during the president’s three day visit to the region.

It failed to start Wednesday morning, where it was parked at Ben-Gurion airport in Tel-Aviv, amid reports it was mistakenly filled with diesel instead of petrol.

Another Limo is being hurriedly brought in from Jordon, according to the Iranian Maan news agency, citing Israel’s channel 10.

Obama left the airport and flew to Jerusalem by presidential helicopter followed by a parade of Black hawk helicopters.

Obama has already apologized about the size of the Presidential entourage.

The Presidential limo is an armored Cadilac, known as the ‘beast’ and is sealed against biological or chemical attack.

“The Beast” is a heavily-modified Cadillac DTS based on a General Motors industrial-duty truck platform, and is estimated to weigh eight tons. It is well-armored, with eight-inch thick doors, bulletproof glass and a superstructure composed of titanium, ceramic, steel and aluminum. It reportedly gets just eight miles to the gallon. The vehicle has its own oxygen supply and is essentially sealed against the outside environment, making it able to sustain chemical or biological attacks . The cabin is capable of functioning as a “panic room,” and outside sounds are piped in via speakers.

The Beast is equipped with night-vision capable cameras, tear gas cannons, Kevlar-reinforced run-flat tires and steel wheels that can work without tires at all.

The limo carries a supply of President Obama’s blood for use in case of an emergency. It is also rumored to be equipped with infrared smoke grenades to conceal the vehicle from attack by rocket-propelled grenades.

Iran will destroy Israel cities of Tel Aviv and Haifa if attacked – Supreme leader

Iran’s most powerful authority, Ayatollah Ali Khemenei, said the Islamic Republic would raze the cities of Tel Aviv and Haifa “to the ground” if Israel launched a military strike against it.

“At times the officials of the Zionist regime [Israel] threaten to launch a military invasion, but they themselves know that if they make the slightest mistake the Islamic Republic will raze Tel Aviv and Haifa to the ground,” Ayotollah Ali Khamenei said during an address on live state television.

Obama said Thursday time is running out for a diplomatic solution.

“Iran must know that time is not unlimited. I have made the position of the United States clear: Iran must not get a nuclear weapon,” he said.

He also said that the US will always protest Israel.

“Israel will never be destroyed as long as the United States exists. You are not alone,” he said.

Israel has threatened military action against Iran unless it abandons its nuclear activates which the West fears are aimed at building an atomic bomb. Tehran denies the allegations and says its nuclear industry is for peaceful purposes only.

Khamenei also said that he is not optimistic but “not opposed” to direct nuclear talks with US.

“I am not optimistic about these talks. Why? Because our past experiences show that talks for American officials does not mean for us to sit down and reach a logical solution… What they mean by talks is that we sit down and talk until Iran accepts their viewpoint,” Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on the live TV address.

North Korea threatens to attack US bases in Okinawa, Guam

0

25.siNorth Korea has threatened to target US airbases in Okinawa and Guam as it issued an air raid alert on Thursday and ordered its military to stand ready, the country’s state media reported.

The United States is advised not to forget that our precision target tools have within their range the Anderson Air Force base on Guam where the B-52 takes off, as well as the Japanese mainland where nuclear powered submarines are deployed and the navy bases on Okinawa,” the North Korean command spokesman was quoted as saying by KCNA news agency.

The threats came as a response to the use of nuclear-armed US B-52 bombers in joint war games South Korea held with the US. “We cannot tolerate the US carrying out nuclear strike drills, setting us as targets, and advertising them as strong warning messages,” the spokesman said.

The air raid alert was issued at 9:32 am local time (00:32 am GMT) with military units and civilians told to take cover, Korean Central Television said.

A news report by South Korea’s Yonhap news agency suggested that the warning appears to be a part of a military drill, though this has not been confirmed by Pyongyang.

This comes amid growing tensions on the Korean Peninsula and ongoing saber-rattling that followed the UN Security Council’s imposition of strict sanctions on Pyongyang over its third underground nuclear test in February.

On Monday, the US said that every military resource at its disposal, including its nuclear arsenal, would be available to South Korea in the event of a confrontation with the North.

Earlier in March, Pyongyang threatened all-out nuclear war with the US and South Korea after the two countries began joint military drills on the Korean Peninsula. The North also nullified the 1953 armistice that ended the Korean War, claiming the drills were preparations for an invasion.
