A programmer at a US company outsourced his job to a Chinese contractor for a fraction of his six-figure salary. After handing over his login information, he spent his days on Facebook and perused cat videos while the Chinese firm worked in his name.

‘Bob,’ as he has been dubbed in the media, had his cover blown when an external audit showed that a Chinese company had been logging in under his name.

The audit revealed an active virtual private network (VPN) between ‘Bob’s’ workstation and a firm in Shenyang, China. Suspecting a breach in their security system, the company’s executives initially requested an audit from Operations Verizon.

“Evidence even suggested he had the same scam going across multiple companies in the area,”Andrew Valentine of Verizon said, adding that “he earned several hundred thousand dollars a year, and only had to pay the Chinese consulting firm about $50,000 annually.”

Verizon uncovered hundreds of PDF files and invoices exchanged between the Shenyang contractor and ‘Bob.’ Verizon said that the employee had sent his security credentials by Fedex to the Chinese company so they could log on with his username during working hours.

“Authentication was no problem. He physically FedExed his RSA [security] token to China so that the third-party contractor could log-in under his credentials during the workday. It would appear that he was working an average nine-to-five work day,” Valentine said.

Verizon revealed the Shenyang contractor had been working for ‘Bob’ for months, and had access to the classified files of the “critical infrastructure company.” This gives rise to the question: What did Bob actually do during his workday?

A look at the employee’s Internet browsing history revealed he whiled away the hours updating Facebook, surfing Reddit and perusing the Web for cat videos. And at the end of every workday, ‘Bob’ would send a personal email to the management to safeguard his integrity.

Official performance figures for the company where ‘Bob’ worked showed that he was the most productive developer in the building.

‘Bob’ has been described as “inoffensive, quiet” and talented, and is fluent in several different programing languages.

A blonde Brooklyn bombshell has won the coveted Miss America title in the far-reaching pageant in Las Vegas. The 23-year-old beauty is taking home a $50,000 college scholarship and the crown to wear for one year.

During her reign, Mallory Hagan will be challenged to help raise awareness of child sexual abuse. She said the issue is close to her heart because the women in her family themselves grappled with sexual abuse, AP reported.

She also shared her opinion about stepping up measures against violence in schools.

“I don’t think the proper way to fight violence is with violence,” Hagan stated. “I think the proper way is to educate people on guns and the ways we can use them properly. We can lock them up, we can have gun safety classes, we can have a longer waiting period.”

She is set to go on a nationwide speaking tour and raising money for the Children’s Miracle Network, the organization’s official charity.

Hagan is said to be the first Miss America from Brooklyn and the fourth from New York State. When all the contestants had to give snappy remarks about their states, Hagan chose to refer to the last year’s Superstorm, saying, “Sandy may have been swept away our shores but never our spirit.”

Hagan said she had less than $1,000 in her pocket when she moved to New York from Alabama. She lives in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn and studies communications at the Fashion Institute of Technology. She has been taking part in beauty pageants for a decade, reportedly starting as a teen in the Miss Alabama’s Outstanding Teen contest. She competed for Miss New York in 2010 and 2011 before finally winning in 2012.

The 92nd Miss America annual show featured contestants from all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

‘Total control’: Warner Bros. wins legal battle over Superman

It’s been finally carved in kryptonite: Superman officially belongs to Warner Bros. An appeals court has granted complete commercial control of the iconic Superman franchise to one of the major film studios.

A three-judge panel unanimously ruled that the heirs of Superman’s co-creator, Jerome Siegel, must abide by a  letter written by the family’s attorney in 2001, accepting Warner Bros.’ offer for their 50 percent share of Superman. Despite the fact that the letter was never formalized into a contract, according to the appeals court it was still binding.

“Statements from the attorneys for both parties establish that the parties had undertaken years of negotiations, that they had resolved the last outstanding point in the deal during a conversation on Oct. 15, 2001, and that the letter accurately reflected the material terms they had orally agreed to on that day,” Judge Stephen Reinhardt wrote for the panel, AP reported.

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals therefore undoes the 2008 court decision ordering Warner Bros. to share an undetermined amount of money earned since 1999 with the heirs, as well as to give the family control of key components of the Superman story, including his costume. If that decision were to stand, the studio would have had to negotiate a new costly royalty agreement with the family, according to AP.

“The court’s decision paves the way for the Siegel finally to receive the compensation they negotiated for and which DC has been prepared to pay for over a decade,” Warner Bros. said in a statement.“We are extremely pleased that Superman’s adventures can continue to be enjoyed across all media platforms worldwide for generations to come.”

Earlier the family’s attorney promised to appeal another Warner Bros. victory involving the family of Superman’s other creator, Joseph Shuster, and their bid for half the commercial rights. Marc Toberoff also represents the Shuster heirs, who lost their bid to retain half a share of Superman.

A federal judge in Los Angeles had ruled that Shuster’s sister and brother relinquished any chance to reclaim Superman copyrights in exchange for annual pension payments from DC Comics. According to U.S. District Judge Otis Wright, the families of both creators have received over $4 million since 1978, plus undefined bonuses and medical benefits.

Condom controversy: US porn-makers keen to overturn Measure B law

Two US porn giants, filmmakers Vivid Entertainment and Califa Productions, are suing Los Angeles County over the new law requiring adult movie actors to wear condoms on set. According to porn industry insiders, the new measure is unconstitutional.

“Overturning this law is something I feel very passionate about,” founder of LA-based Vivid Entertainment, Steven Hirsch, told AFP. “I believe the industry’s current testing system works well.”

Hirsch’s company, Califa Productions as well as actors Kayden Kross and Logan Pierce reportedly claim the porn film industry already regulates itself well enough to protect actors against AIDS/HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.

US porn industry insiders argue that the so-called Measure B, approved and voted into force in early November, violates the First Amendment right to free expression.

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation welcomed the law, which was backed by 55.9 per cent of Los Angeles County voters.

Since 2004 over 300,000 explicit scenes have been filmed with no transmission of the HIV/AIDS virus, according to AFP.

America’s multi-million dollar adult film industry is largely based in Los Angeles and fears fewer viewers would want to see porn films with actors using condoms.

“Measure B will have vast unintended consequences which may undermine industry efforts to protect the health of our actors and actresses,” Hirsch said, warning the new law could result in driving production abroad where there is no protection.

Last year, leading porn producers had to stop filming for nearly a week after a performer tested positive for HIV. The Free Speech Coalition said, however, the case was later determined to have been a false report.

In 2010, porn actor Derrick Burts was confirmed as HIV-positive, which also halted production, and in 2004 at least five performers tested positive prompting another moratorium.

Crumbling levees threaten US with new Katrina

Across the US, hundreds of federal flood control systems are at risk of failing, endangering millions of people and property across 37 states.

When Hurricane Katrina passed over New Orleans in 2005, more than 50 deficient levees were breaches, killing 1,464 people who were in close proximity to the flood control systems. Another natural disaster could subject hundreds, thousands or even millions more Americans to the same fate if the government doesn’t address the issue.

Inspectors discovered 326 deficient levees across the US, whose likely failures could leave millions of people dead. A breach could demolish homes and cost local governments millions of dollars. By failing to repair the defective structures, the US is choosing to risk the lives of its citizens who are walking on eggshells with their proximity to the flood zones. In its first ever inventory of the nation’s flood control systems, inspectors raised the overdue alarm that hundreds of levees may be unable to regulate water levels and prove useless in face of heavy rains. Such populated cities as Washington DC, Sacramento, Dallas, Cleveland and many others might be flooded at any moment.

The US Army Corps of Engineers has only issued ratings for 58 percent of the 2,487 flood control systems, which means inspectors could still discover hundreds more deficient levees. Many of the earthen levees are crumbling under the effect of trees, shrubs and animal holes. Decaying pipes and pumping stations could also cause the flood control systems downfall, while some of the levees are dangerously close to houses or even have houses built on top of them.

Although the Army Corps has no estimates as to how many people are endangered by the defective systems, the 2,487 federally regulated flood control systems protect about 10 million people. The failures of several hundred levees could therefore impact millions of US residents.

Snap elections: Pakistani govt reaches deal with protesters

A team of Pakistani ministers and political leaders have reached a deal with protesters. The document provides for the dissolution of parliament and snap elections, RT’s correspondent in Islamabad reports.

The negotiation team presented the draft to Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf, who signed the accord. Official sources said that President Asif Ali Zardari also approved the agreement, Xinhua reports.

RT’s Tariq Muhiyuddin says the parliament will be dissolved before March 16 and elections will be held in 90 days, according to the deal. The General Election Commission is also expected to see changes.

We have reached an agreement,” Muslim Cleric Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri told supporters camped out near parliament. “Allah granted us a victory and now you can go home.

Qadri, along with his supporters, has been staging street protests in the capital for several days calling on the government to resign.

On Thursday, Qadri and the goverment negotiators spent over four hours in talks. Emerging from the meeting, the cleric said an agreement had been reached and called it the ‘Islamabad Long March Declaration’.

He added that he would put a halt to the street protest in Islamabad. Once the document is signed by the PM, he will read it out at the main site of the protests, Jinnah Avenue.

Qadri delivered his speech from the heated and bullet proof container where he had been holed-up since the political crisis began four days ago. His supporters, many of them women and children, cheered in the pouring rain.

The deal may ease pressure on the ruling Pakistan’s People Party (PPP), which has come under fire for failing to tackle a range of problems gripping the country, including rampant corruption, a Taliban insurgency and a stagnant economy.

Thousands of Qadri supporters had been rallying in the Pakistani capital since Monday. The cleric calls for the removal of the government and denounces the politicians as corrupt thieves, accusing them of failing to fix severe energy and gas shortages. Qadri said he wanted the protest to continue until the government is dissolved and electoral reforms are introduced.

In an exclusive interview with RT, Tahir-ul Qadri explained why he is calling for a revolution and what his aims are.

In Pakistan there is neither monarchical rule nor military dictatorship. There is electoral authoritarianism, electoral dictatorship. True democracy does not exist in this society, neither in the political field, nor in the social field nor in the economic field. No democracy.  We have to get rid of corruption and corrupt leaders,” he said.

He continued that eradication of corruption is crucial to the development of the entire Muslim world and all the third world.
