The 48th Annual Palm Desert Golf Cart Parade was held on Sunday October 28th on El Paseo. This years theme is American Pride presented by the Auen Foundation. Dick Heckman was this years honorary guest. The Air Museum held a flyover to start the parade with everyone looking skyward for these old biplanes.

The day started at 7:30 with a pancake breakfast sponsored by the Palm Desert Rotary Club. There was a children’s play zone on Larkspur at 11:00. A fancy golf cart show and food vendors filled the day. The parade started at 1:00 with the Camp Pendleton 1st Marine Division Band leading off the parade. Floats of all sizes on golf carts, decorated golf carts, band, owners with pets and children all comprised this family event. Families filled both side of El Paseo Ave to watch. Balloons, popcorn and sandwiches were all part of this wonderful day.

Prizes were awarded to the various floats and entries. The top Sweepstakes and Mayors trophy went to Desert Arc for their beautiful float, Voyage of American Pride. Fifteen first and second prizes were handed out before the parade. Winners could be seen holding up the trophy as they worked their way down the parade route.

‘Voice’ of Wikipedia: Opera about sex to premiere in London

If talking about sex makes you blush with embarrassment there’s an opera that carries a tune for everything you wanted to know but were too shy to ask. ‘Life from Light’ reportedly borrowed its verse from Wikipedia descriptions of sexual intercourse.

One of the arias contains the following description: “The erect penis of the male is inserted into the female’s vagina until the male ejaculates semen which contains sperm, into the female’s vagina,” The Independent reported.

‘Life from Light’ is the brainchild of the 36-year-old Spanish composer Toni Castells, hailed as “Massive Attack meets Mendelssohn”.

“At times I have problems dealing with my dark side, music helps me return to the light,”Castells explains on his website.

The theme of the opera is said to revolve around Charles Darwin’s famous quote about “the impossibility of conceiving this immense and wonderful universe, including man with his capacity for looking far backwards and far into futurity, as the result of blind chance or necessity.”

“If we can knock down any pre-conceived walls that exist within opera and the general public of the genre being in anyway elitist and the domain of the upper classes, then we will be revolutionising the opera world as well as helping to educate even further the masses when it comes to subjects such as family planning and safe sex,” the up-and-coming composer told the newspaper.

Set to premiere at London’s Union Chapel, the show has been modestly billed on the venue’s website as “an exploration of what it means to be human on planet Earth.”

New Jersey kicks out Sandy volunteers because they aren’t unionized

Utility workers from across the US are descending on the Northeastern states left ravaged by Superstorm Sandy, but some volunteers making the trek are being told they can’t pitch in since they don’t belong to a union.

According to a report published late Thursday by WAFF News out of Seaside Heights, crews coming to assist all the way from Alabama’s Decatur Utilities were turned away because they aren’t unionized, despite making the 800-mile jaunt to lend a hand.

WAFF quotes Decatur worker Derrick Moore, who tells the network that he and his colleagues “are frustrated being told, in essence, ‘thanks, but no thanks.’”

Left with nothing to do in New Jersey, Moore and other members of the Decatur team are reportedly waiting in Roanaoke, Virginia to see if Seaside Heights authorities will change their mind. Meanwhile, though, millions of residents up and down the East Coast remain without power after a powerful tropical storm downed power lines and flooded streets from North Carolina to New England.

According to the latest figures available early Friday, the death toll from the frankenstorm may already be close to hitting 100, and recovery efforts are expected to continue for weeks, if not months. At the same time, though, things may be off to a slower start in New Jersey if nonunionized volunteers are refused any further.

Bill Yell, a spokesman for Alabama’s Huntsville Utilities, tells AL.com that nine of his employees are currently helping with recovery from the storm, but not in New Jersey where he claims they were told they weren’t needed. Instead, his crew of unionized workers has been volunteering their services with Long Island Power Authority in New York.

According to ABC News, more than 40,000 workers from utility companies across 49 states have been dispatched to the East Coast to aid in recovery efforts, with the US Air Force now assisting by moving dozens of utility vehicles onboard cargo planes.

On Thursday, forecasting firm Eqecat estimated the damage from the storm to be close to $50 billion.

It’s “Déjà Vu All Over Again” At Z107.7!

Morongo Basin residents may think they have stepped into the Wayback Machine when they turn on their radios Monday Morning, November 5th.

Radio personality Pat Michaels will be back in the airchair co-hosting the Z107.7 Morning Show with Gary Daigneault after a five year hiatus to Arizona. Les Taylor, who retired with honors in 2001 and agreed to come back “For 90 days”, will be climbing back into his well-deserved rocking chair.

Taylor and Daigneault were the original hosts of the Morning show when Z107.7 signed on to the air in July of 1989, prior to that they worked at the then KDHI/KQYN radio stations in Twentynine Palms as a team since 1987. In February of 2001 Taylor retired and Michaels, who had worked in various positions at Z107.7 since 1990, moved into the Morning show position.

After a very successful six years with Z107.7, in 2007, Michaels followed his heart to the great State of Arizona where he became the Program Director and Morning Show host for KAFF Radio in Flagstaff. At that time Daigneault asked Taylor if he would fill in “for 90 days” until a replacement for Michaels could be found. After the 90 days was up Taylor was asked to stay on a “little longer”, that was five years ago!

With industry upheaval changing the radio market in Flagstaff, Michaels was offered a position in Palm Springs but his heart wanted to go home to the Morongo Basin and an agreement was reached for his return to Z107.7 where he still retains a significant fan base.

“The Z107.7 Morning Show with Gary Daigneault and Pat Michaels, Part Deaux”, starts the morning of November 5, 2012 with Michaels handling the control board and offering his unique down-home sense of humor and Daigneault handling the News and features.

Z107.7 General Manager Cindy Daigneault is delighted with Michael’s return saying, “We have always felt like one big family at Z107.7, Pat’s return is just like one of the kids moving back home.” She also expressed her appreciation for Les Taylor’s dedication over the years, “I don’t know what we would have done without Les, and we never imagined when we asked him to come out of retirement for a short time it would be for five years!”
