Growing gulf: Iran deploys Russian made sub as tensions rise

Taregh-1, which has deployed to the Persian Gulf

Days after the US and 30 other nations began naval exercises in the Persian Gulf; Tehran has announced it is sending a Russian submarine to bolster its forces in the area.

The Taregh-1, one of three Russian built Kilo class submarines, was sent to the southern port of Bandar Abbas, after completing a refit earlier this year.

The deployment comes as Iran strengthens its naval forces in the region. A destroyer, the Sahand, has also been launched after an overhaul and is expected to be ready for operations in the near future.

The country’s Supreme leader, Ayatollah Khameni, who has command of all military affairs, said that Iran has no intention of attacking another nation.

“The armed forces should be upgraded in such a way that no one will be able to violate the reinforced fortress of Iran,” Khameni said Tuesday whilst visiting a naval base in the northern Iranian port of Noshar.

The Iranian deployment comes two days after US led anti-mine sweeping exercises got underway in the Persian Gulf.

30 countries are participating in the maneuvers and today three British warships joined the armada. Other countries taking part include Saudi Arabia and France.

They are being interpreted as a show of force, warning Tehran not to disrupt vital oil routes in the Strait of Hormuz. 18 million barrels a day, some 35 percent of the world’s oil shipments, pass through the 21 mile wide channel every day.

Angel View Provides Gap Funds To ILP To Cover Mileage For Adults With Disabilities

0

As detailed in the August 18 article, “Grant loss may hinder doctor visits,” 33 desert residents with disabilities who rely on the Independent Living Partnership (ILP) for assistance to access needed healthcare services were poised to lose their benefits. But thanks to gap funding provided by Angel View Crippled Children’s Foundation, Inc., that crisis has been averted, announced Richard Smith, ILP executive director.

“We utilize grant funds to provide mileage reimbursement for seniors and adults with disabilities. The miles we cover help them access essential medical services and supplies,” Smith explained. “Last year, ILP was awarded funding from the Regional Access Project that enabled 33 individuals with disabilities to receive mileage reimbursement. When we learned that grant had not been renewed, it left very vulnerable individuals with no way to reimburse volunteer drivers.”

Enter Angel View. According to Melvyn Haber, president of Angel View’s board, “Our mission is to assist children and adults with disabilities to reach their maximum potential. They can’t reach their potential if they’re unable to get to medical and therapy appointments. As soon as our board learned of their plight through The Desert Sun article, we voted unanimously to provide gap funding while the Independent Living Partnership works out a more permanent funding solution.”

Typically, Angel View provides services directly. The organization has built and operates 19 intermediate care facilities for the developmentally disabled (ICF/DD homes). Angel View also runs a Day Program for adults with disabilities weekdays at its Desert Hot Springs headquarters and an Outreach Program for local families raising children with disabilities. “Unlike a lot of local foundations, our primary purpose is not to distribute funds to other organizations,” Haber notes. “We’re in the same situation as Independent Living Partnership. We raise funds in every way possible – through grants, donations, fundraisers. But this need falls well within our mission. We were very happy to be able to assist.”

For nearly 20 years, the TRIP Program, operated by the non-profit Independent Living Partnership (ILP), has been helping people in the Coachella Valley travel to needed healthcare appointments and other lifeline services.  TRIP clients are seniors and those with disabilities who do not drive, have no family to help, and are not able to use public transportation. Some TRIP funding is provided by the Riverside County Office on Aging.  But additional funding is needed.

“A contribution of as little as $25 a month will mean that a Coachella Valley resident will receive five needed rides,” Smith pointed out.  “Anyone interested in supporting this important program for seniors and individuals with disabilities can contact us at (951) 653-0740 or can email info@angelview.org.”

Since 1991, the Independent Living Partnership has been empowering the elderly and people with disabilities through life enriching programs to strengthen and rebuild  social networks, assist them in accessing needed human and  social services, and maintain a more healthy and independent life style.

Palm Springs Gay and Lesbian Film Festival

Fifth Anniversary Edition Runs from Thursday, Sept. 20th through Sunday, Sept. 23rd

September 17, 2012,  Palm Springs, CA – LGBT Short Films, 38 of them to be exact, are more than just the opening act for the feature films at the fifth anniversary edition of Cinema Diverse: The Palm Springs Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, which opens on Thursday, September 20th and runs through Sunday, September 23rd. “The short films we’ve selected run the gambit,” said Michael C. Green, Managing Director of The Palm Springs Cultural Center. “They are as short as 2 minutes and as long as 37 minutes. Many of them are paired with feature length films, but we also have four screening times that are devoted exclusively to groups of loosely themed short films.”

Short films, which sometimes struggle to find a broad audience commercially, are considered by many industry insiders to be succinct, yet pure forms of artistic expression for filmmakers. They are also very often the first films for young filmmakers working on graduate programs or hoping to get noticed for their work.

“We received far more short film entries this year than feature films,” Green said. “Some of our selections, like FAGS AFTER DARK and THE BURIED, are powerful – even brutal in their portrayal of gay bashing and gay panic violence. Others, like SISTERHOOD OF THE SASH: INTERNATIONAL MS LEATHER AT 25, POWERFUL OUT WOMEN, AMERICA’S MOST UNWANTED and ENTRY DENIED, are great narrow-focus documentaries. And then there are some that are more light-hearted – HALF-SHARE, a story about Summer on Fire Island (starring Alec Mapa), THE ALTERED LIVES OF LAVONNE SALLEE (the story of an altered Barbie artist) and TROY: NAKED BOYS BEHIND BARS, SING! – an animated satire of gaysploitation entertainment. There’s really something for everyone, and a little bit of everything in our line-up of shorts.”

Green is particularly excited about a program that was proposed to him by his friend, Comedian Shann Carr. “Shann was telling me about all these new lesbian web series that have been popping up on the internet. She wanted to find a way to share them with local women, so she and two of her favorite local editors created a Montage-Mash-Up featuring a bunch of the best lesbian web series making waves on the net.” “It’s just a sneak peek,” Carr said. “But it’s enough to give film festival audiences an idea of not only what’s out there, but also how the newest indie producers are reaching audiences outside of theaters.” The Montage-Mash-Up will screen as part of the “Chick Flicks Screening on Saturday, September 22nd at 11:30am.

Olivia Newton-John at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino

Story and photos by Pat Krause

Olivia Newton-John graced the Fantasy Springs  Resort Casino on Saturday, Sept 15th. This sold out concert brought Olivia Newton-John back to the Desert. She was here a few years ago at the McCallum Theater.

Locally known, She was a major star, Betsy Mae Harling,in the cult film, Sordid Lives, that plays yearly at the Camelot theatre. She is the most famous for her role of Sandy in the film Grease with John Travolta. She paired with Travolta in another film called Two of a Kind. She has sold millions of records during her career and still had a fantastic voice. She can reach the high notes with ease as she showed the audience during one of the songs.

Her performance consisted of many of her hit songs. The crowd got very enthusiastic when she asked them if they wanted to hear some of the songs from Grease. They all stood with arms waving in the air when she sang Physical.

She brought out 3 stools and had her guitarists on each side of her. Then her 3 vocalists came and stood behind while she sang. During one of the songs her male vocalist came on stage to sing a duet with her. They made beautiful music together and the audience agreed with a loud applause.

She also sang some of the little known favorites of hers from her earlier years as a songstress. Some of the songs that she sang during the concert were fan favorites, Take Me Home, Country Roads, Please Mr Please, Let Me Be There, Suddenly and Xanadu. A trip down memory lane for many people.

She is a Grammy award winning Singer, a Songwriter, Actress, Author and a breast cancer survivor so many of her more recent tunes are geared to her battle with Cancer. She has become an advocate for Cancer Prevention and Cure.
